How & Why to Keep Your Carpets Safe By Testing for Colorfastness

Learn how to test for colorfastness and why this keeps your carpets and upholstery safe.

Did you know that using the wrong cleaning product on the wrong fibres can damage your carpet or upholstery? This happens when the dyes in your carpet or furniture start to bleed or transfer because they don't mix well with the cleaning products being used. We call the ability of fabric to resist this colour mixing, “colourfastness”. This article will talk about what colourfastness is, why it's important to test it before cleaning, and how to do the testing.

What is Colourfastness?

Colourfastness in carpets refers to the ability of a carpet to keep its original colour. In the case of carpet cleaning, we are checking to see if the dyes used to colour the carpet will bleed or leak when exposed to the cleaning agent you’re using. Testing is a guarantee that after you clean your carpet, it will still look just as bright and nice as when you first got it.

Why Test for Colourfastness?

Carpets and furniture can be made from all kinds of materials. Cleaning products are made of many different chemicals. If you use the wrong cleaner on a carpet, it can look like a science experiment gone wrong. Testing for colourfastness is a safety check. It makes sure that when you clean your carpet, you won't accidentally turn it into a colourful mess. Whether you're using homemade cleaners or professional products, testing for colourfastness is like a protective shield against colour problems. It's not just about the carpet; it's about making sure the fabric, the dye, and the cleaning products get along.

How to Test for Colourfastness

Testing for colourfastness is easy. Here's a simple way to make sure that your carpet's colours stay where they belong:

Choose a Hidden Spot: Find a spot that's not easily seen, like the corner of a closet. For furniture, check underneath, on the bottom – sometimes you can see a bit of fabric on the edge that’s great to test on.

White Towel Method: Put the cleaning product on a clean, white towel, and gently press it onto the carpet. Look closely to see if any colour comes off. If only dirt comes off on the towel, that's good – it means the cleaning product is safe for your carpet. But if colours start to show up on the towel, think twice about using that product. You don't want your carpet to end up with unexpected colours.

A warning: Never pour the cleaner directly onto the carpet. This could lead to a big mess with colours spreading all over, and it is almost always unfixable. Always pour the cleaner onto the towel first, then use the cleaner on the towel to test.

Testing for colourfastness should be the first thing you do when cleaning; it's an insurance policy for your carpet's colours. Whenever you clean a spot, always check for colourfastness to make sure your carpets stay as bright as the day you first fell in love with them.
